Chinese Encoding -- 如何看中文
For Netscape Communicator 4.78 users only

If you are not a Netscape Communicator 4.78 user, click here to return to the browser selection page.

Netscape Communicator 4.78 has the Chinese Character decoding capability embedded in the browser. Therefore you do not need to use any third-party character encoding software to view Chinese on our web pages.

Kindly follow the steps below to setup your Netscape 4.78 to view Chinese.

Click Edit -> click Preferences. The following window shows up.

Expand Appearance (click on the + sign) -> click Fonts -> For the encoding, pick Traditional Chinese.

For 'Variable Width Font' and 'Fixed Width Font', pick any Chinese character font by clicking on the 'down arrow', then choose either MingLiU, MS Hei, MS Song, or PMingLiU as shown in the image above.

Now click the radio button 'Use my default fonts ...' and click [OK].

You can repeat the above steps to setup the encoding for Simlified Chinese and any other languages of your choice.

When you are back at the browser, click the 'Reload' button on the menu bar (as shown in the above image) to 'refresh' the page so you can see the Chinese characters.

You should be able to view Chinese now.

NOTE: You do not need to do this the next time you open Netscape as it remembers your settings.

If you still have problems, kindly e-mail Francis Tam
